 Plantago major, Linn.
 Natural order: Plantaginaceae.
 Preparation: Tincture of the whole plant, or of the root.

 Great nervous excitability and trembling of the whole body, with pulse at 120 (fourteenth day). Highest degree of excitability (twenty-first day). General depression and despondency, though the weather is bright and beautiful (fourteenth day). Feel very much out of sorts; low-spirited, with inclination to do a lot of work, but get tired and irritated as soon as I begin (eighty- fourth day). Feeling of suppressed irritability (after one hour and twenty minutes, second day). Very irritable and easily vexed, with an excitement of the nervous system (tenth day). Irritable and vexed mood, with utter inability for any mental exercise (twelfth day). Great feeling of irritation; cannot bear to be spoken to (fifth day). Irritable feeling, with slight headache in the right temple (sixth day). Low-spirits; irritable; disinclination to work (seventeenth day). Great irritation with the severe headache; cannot bear to be spoken to (fourth day).
 Rather irritable (twentieth day). Irritable, with nausea and giddiness, with trembling sensation in the right arm (twenty- ninth day). Irritable feeling, with slight headache (fifty-third day). Impatient to get anything finished (second day). Impatient and restless mood, with a dull, stupid, or muddled feeling in the brain; very irritable and morose temper, worse in the evening (third day); very irritable and restless mood; easily vexed (fourth day). Restless disposition, and dull feeling over the sinciput (eleventh day). Desire to do several things at once, but no inclination to move and do one, with the loss of appetite (sixteenth day). Feeling great desire to be at home when abroad (twenty-ninth day). Meditative mood or internal revery, and unable to associate my mind with any external object, with the feeling of great prostration (eleventh day). Inability to think, with restlessness at night (seventh night). From the fifteenth to the twenty-first day I have ceased to take notes, for the reason that my mind has been in such a confused state, and a disrelish as well as a great difficulty for any abstract reflection or mental exercise of any kind, that I have found it too difficult.
 I might say, however, that the symptoms, from the fifteenth to the twenty-first day, were, in their general features, the same as on the twelfth, thirteenth, and fourteenth; if any difference, the nervous and cerebral continued to increased in their severity until the twenty-first day, which, as well as during the whole proving, were worse in the evening, and gradually increased in severity until next morning, with some exceptions; but whether these exceptions assumed the same regularity as I find on examining my notes of the first six or eight days, namely, worse two successive nights and better the third, I am not able to say.
 On the thirtieth day, my mind is still confused, making study, for any length of time, impossible. Mind confused, and entirely unable to listen to the lectures; feeling of great prostration, with utter inability to think; attempting to exercise the mental faculties, would increase the depression, and rapid respiration would ensue, with a feeling of great anxiety; at 12 M., was obliged to leave the college and lie down (fourteenth day). Mind somewhat confused (first day). Mind inactive, with a dull, muddled feeling in the head (fifth day); very inactive all day, worse in afternoon and evening, with shifting pains in various parts (fifth day). Aversion to study or thinking (third day). вad memory (seventeenth day).

 Head.
 Giddiness with the irritable mood (twenty-ninth day). Violent irritation of the brain; bruised, maddening feeling; cannot bear the slightest contradiction (sixteenth day). Feeling of irritability about the head, in different parts; fine stitches (eleventh day). Irritable feeling in the head, with soreness of the eyes, at 9 p.m (second day). After dinner, I had a dull, painful, stupid feeling in my head, with considerable fever (seventh day). Dull feeling of the head or slight headache, during the day (fourth day). Dull feeling in the head (first day). Muddled and confused feeling in the head, with inability to think, which lasted all day, and worse in the evening (second day). Dull, stupid, or muddled feeling in the brain, with the impatient and restless mood (third day). Dull, muddled feeling in the head, with the inactivity of mind (fourth day). Head is clouded, heavy, and dull (fourteenth day). Heaviness and weariness in the head, in the evening, relieved by holding the head backwards, with slight stiffness of the neck (nineteenth day). Pain now in the head, then in dorsum of big toe (sixth day). Dull stupefying pain in the whole head, relieved by motion and aggravated by study (eighth day). Pain in the head, relieved by pressure, for a few seconds, or from contact with anything cold (fifth day). Pain over the left eyebrow, and deep in the scalp; bruised, dull aching, relieved by shutting the eyes, at 9 p.m (second day). Occasional pains in the head, during the evening (sixth day). Twinges of pain in different parts of the head; now in the right temple, extending backward; then through the occiput from ear to ear; then in other parts of the head more or less severe (seventh day). Pains in the head, most in the left temporal region, all the time, or with but little intermission (fourteenth day). Pain in the head, on turning round, as if the brain were stretched (eighteenth day). All the pains at times in the head, but very slight (nineteenth day). Occasional darting pains in the head (fourth day). Shooting pains in the head, occurring frequently during the day, mostly in the right parietal region, sometimes in the left (seventh day). Pains in the head, continuing all day, not so bad in the afternoon (ninth day).
 Pains in the head and various parts of the body, at different times throughout the day (tenth day); still felt, but at longer intervals, and with diminished intensity (eleventh day). Pains in the head continue at irregular intervals (after five hours, fourteenth day). Pains in the head (seventeenth day). Severe headache over the left eye and side of the head, with great irritation (fourth day). Violent, bruised sort of headache (on waking in the morning) over the scalp and back of the head; unable to rest long in one place on the pillow; relief for a time by resting on the part in pain (tenth day). Headache as usual (thirty-ninth day). Slight headache, with irritable feeling (fifty-third day). Awoke in the morning with headache in the left half of head, principally in the temple; bruised sensation; midday, bruised sensation all over the head, as if beaten, with pain extending to the top of nose (fifth day). Stupid headache, etc. (thirtieth day). Slight headache, a heavy sensation in the head and inclination to drowse (five hours after first dose, third day); same kind of headache in the forehead (eighth day).
 Slight headache and some chilliness (sixth day). Slight headache (sixth day). Oppression deep in the head, and sense of something lying in the head, through from one ear to the other (second night). Feeling of swelling about the head (fifth day). Fullness of the head, and sore feeling in the temples (twenty- fourth day). The whole front half of the head, face, jaws, and gums feel sore and bruised (twenty-sixth day). Fine stitches, before and above the ear, feeling as if the bone were swollen, with stiffness (twenty-sixth day). Forehead. Feeling of irritation in the forehead (second day). Dull oppressive feeling through the forehead, with sometimes a dull pain extending across form the temporal bones, apparently at the base of the brain. I thought probably this might be the effect of a cold. Dull pains over the frontal region and extending over the eyes (sixth day). Pain in the forehead over the eyes, with tenderness on pressure (eighth day). Aching pain in the left frontal protuberance, lasting a few minutes and occurring frequently, and tenderness on pressure (ninth day). вoring pain in the left frontal eminence (tenth day). Transient boring pains in the right frontal eminence (eleventh day). Dull pain over the eyes, relieved by exercise and motion (twelfth day). Headache in forehead and over the right eye and temple; worse on movement, with pressure over the eye (twenty-ninth day). Headache over the right eye, in the evening (forty-third day). Headache over left eye, same as before, passing off after eating (seventy-sixth day). Pain or fullness over the eyes, with the stuffed-up nose (thirty-fifth day).
 Bruised feeling of forehead, with dimness of the eyes (thirty- sixth day). вruised sensation in the forehead and temples (twenty-sixth day). Temples. A stupid sort of feeling in the left temple towards the eye, relieved by the free use of the finger; liable to such pains in east winds; generally confined to left side; occasionally in the right; dull, stupefying pain with sleepy feeling and mistiness, causing me to wipe a supposed film from the eye, feeling as if a hair were hanging over the eye; sleep often moves the headache; the other parts of the brain seem to think clear enough, but the affected part unfit for use; when this headache comes on, spit a quantity of brown, dirty-tasting saliva; pain relieved by pressing my hand on anything hard behind the left neck at base of occiput, on any part of the left side of the head between cheek-bone and occiput), (twenty-second day).
 Severe pain in left temple; a sort of cloudy sensation (twenty- seventh day). Sharp pains in the left temple, transient (while sitting by the furnace and after having been out), (seventh day).
 Sometimes fleeting pains in both temples, passing in and upwards (thirteenth day). Pains of the shooting character in the mastoid process (ninth day). Dull boring pain in the left temple, in a small spot (eighth day). Transient boring pain in the left temple, in a small spot (eleventh day). In the evening, in both temples, boring-aching pain, worse in a warm room (twenty-sixth day). Slight headache in the right temple, with irritable feeling (sixth day). Headache in the left temple with the flushed face (twelfth day); headache continues (fifteenth and sixteenth days).
 Headache; left temple and left side of head (intense) relieved by pressure (forty-second day). вruised feeling, with fullness in both temples (after one hour and twenty minutes, second day).
 Bruised sensation in both temples (twenty-fourth day). Vertex and Parietals. An intermittent, pulsating, aching pain on the vertex of the head, in a small spot beneath the scalp (ninth day). Dull feeling over the sinciput, and restless disposition (eleventh day). Dull stupefying pain in the sinciput, and finally extending to each side of the occiput (twelfth day). Dull pain in the right side of the head, rather on the right parietal protuberance and frontal eminence. Shooting pains in left parietal region, several times during the afternoon (fifth day). Pains in the head, parietal regions, more in the right than in the left, and generally lasting only a few minutes (ninth day). Pains in the head of a shooting character, sometimes in the right parietal region, sometimes in the left (ninth day). Shooting pains in right parietal region (after one hour, fourteenth day). Pain in the right parietal protuberance (after three hours, fourteenth day). Occasionally shooting pains in the right parietal region (eighteenth day). At 6 , while walking and driving in cool air, pain in left side of head, from over the left eye back toward the occiput; somewhat sharp, soon passing off (fifth day).
 Pretty severe pain in the left side of the head, from the forehead extending deep into the brain, coming on in paroxysms (sixth day). Some pain in the left side of the head, at 10 p.m.

 Fleeting pains in the left side of the head (thirteenth day).
 Headache, in the morning on waking; left side, more or less during the day (thirty-first day). At 10 p.m, occasional headache in the left side of the head, somewhat deep in the brain (eighth day). Some headache in left side of head, at intervals (tenth day). Occasional headache in the left side of the head (twelfth day). вruised, irritable feeling in the left side of head, relieved by lying on it and by pressure (seventeenth day).
 Great irritation and irritable feeling in left half of head as before, with coldness of body and shivering (eighty-fourth day).
 Occiput and External Head. Dull boring pain in the occiput (twelfth day). Dull pain in the occiput; these pains pass off quickly (after three hours, fourteenth day). Headache, in the morning, principally in the back of the head, lasting till after tea, in the afternoon (forty-fourth day). сannon rest the head five minutes in one place, with pain all round the back of the head; temporary relief on changing its position, with thirst (sixteenth night). Temporal arteries much distended, also the superficial vessels of the frontal region; this symptom has been somewhat present during the whole proving, and even quite prominent now (thirtieth day). Slight eruption on the forehead, which soon disappeared, with the itching of the scalp (third day). Pain in the left side of scalp, on turning the head suddenly, as if the brain turned over (eighteenth day). Itching of the scalp, with slight eruption on the forehead, which soon disappeared (third day). More or less itching of scalp, every day (sixth day). A pin on anything behind the ear causes great irritation; obliged to remove it (twenty-sixth day). Itching of the scalp, morning (nineteenth day). Excessive itching of left scalp, for one hour, at 10 (second day).
 Eye.
 Eyes looked very red and inflamed (third day). Feeling as if a hair were hanging over the eye, with the headache (twenty-second day). After going to bed, sharp pain for some moments over the right eye, extending to the temple (first night). вruised pain in left eye, especially on light pressure, one hour (fourth day).
 Soreness of the eyes, with the irritable feeling in the head (second day). Dimness of the eyes, with the bruised feeling in the forehead (thirty-eighth day). вrow and Orbit. Slight pricking; bruised feeling in the left brow, for a few minutes, in the evening (nineteenth day). 12 M., a sharp, darting pain in the superior and outer side of the socket of the right eye (eighteenth day). Pain in the orbits of both eyes; worse on pressure (seventh day). Dull pain in the orbit of the right eye, as if bruised, and worse upon pressure (twelfth day). Dull, aching pain deep in right orbit, lasting only a few moments (after fifteen minutes, sixth day). Lids and вall. Soreness of the eyelids (twenty-fourth day). Soreness of the lids, with the stuffed-up nose (thirty-fifth day). Edema of eyelids, of rising (second day); oedema and redness of eyelids, after rising (fourth day). Unnatural sense of dryness of the eyelids, continuing for several hours (sixth day). Itching of the right eyelid (seventh day). Stiffness and itching of eyelids, at 10 p.m (ninth day).
 Severe painful stitches, first in the left, then in the right eyeball, more at the internal canthus, for an hour (sixth day).
 Ear.
 Pulsating pain in the left ear (eighth day). Shooting pain in the left ear, lasting several minutes (tenth day). Pains often center in the ear, most in the left, beginning in the head, at 10 p.m.
 (fifteenth day). Sensation of hearing more acute; noise is painful; trembling sound. The least noise appears to go through one (fifth day). Ringing in the ears (sixth day).
 Nose.
 (At 6 , frequent sneezing, with discharge of sanious mucus from left nostril), (second day). Excoriation and ulceration of the right nostril (sixteenth and nineteenth days). Sudden discharge of clear water from the left nostril, without pain, about ten or twelve drops. Sudden discharge of yellowish water from the right nostril, about a dozen drops, repeated twice within the hour, but not so much in quantity, at 11.30 p.m.
 (second day). Profuse discharge of sanious mucus from left nostril, continuing all day (third day); discharge not so copious; the right nostril is now affected (fourth day); not so copious or watery (seventh day; not so profuse, but of a greater consistence), (tenth day). Thick discharge from the nose (thirty- fourth day). сonsiderably discharge from nose, and partial stoppage (forty-ninth day); for several days past considerable discharge from the nose, with obstinate stoppage (fifty-third day). сatarrh returned, her handkerchief being saturated with yellow water form the nose, like saffron (after two weeks).
 Fullness and stoppage of the nose (thirty-third day). Nose stuffed up, with pain or fullness over the eyes, with soreness of the lids (thirty-fifth day); nose still stopped up (thirty-sixth day). Fine drawing sensation over the bridge of nose (fifth day).
 Fullness about the root of nose (seventeenth day). Sore feeling of the left nostril, sore to the touch (eleventh day). Dryness of nose (seventeenth day). Tingling sensation about the root of the nose (twenty-fourth day). Sensation across the bridge f the nose, as if the nasal bones were being pressed together or pressed inward, at four (sixteenth day).
 Face.
 Pain in right side of face, with slight swelling and stiffness, as of a boil would form; sore and tender when touched (eighty- fourth day). Pain in right side of face neuralgia (fifth day).
 Awoke in the night with sharp attack of face ache, the right side of cheek; violent aching pain, with much heat and thirst (eleventh day). Inclination to face ache; sudden, fine drawing and shooting pain, subacute (seventeenth day). Face ache on going to bed, very severe, almost driving one to distraction, consisting of an aching, sore, bruised sensation, as if ulcerated, in the left side of the face and temple, passing off in about an hour (twenty-fourth day). Face ache in the night; unable to sleep; severe aching pain in the left side of the face, worse on getting warm, in bed; violent, bruised, aching pain in the right side of the face, on getting war, walking, easier every few minutes; pain entirely gone from left side of face (twenty- sixth day). Violent attack of face ache, both sides of face; most intense, indescribable pain; head seemed to be swollen; relieved by Platina (after six weeks). сheeks and Lips. Left cheek swollen and gums inflamed (eighty-fourth day). Drawing pain in right malar bone, recurring several times (fifth day). At 11 p.m, having an eruption on the lips, dry, scaly, and violent burning and tension; more the inferior one; the burning of the lower lip passed off within an hour, and returned but little again (first day). Lips have been livid, dark, sickly, and rough for many days (twelfth day). Watery bladder on the upper lip, as from cold (twenty-eighth day). Lip feels slimy (forty-fifth day). Front and upper jaw a kind of tingling as if in the nerves; this symptom before going to sleep, but was not continued or very marked (first night).

 Teeth. Since taking the medicine there has been very rapid decay of the teeth; the filling has fallen out of two; easily bleeding gums; teeth feel elongated in the morning, and then ache from 2.30 to 4 each day; the pain is sharp stabbing, and contact along the course of the superior branch of the trifacial nerve is sensitive and readily excites pain, and he cannot lie on that side of the face at night (after a month). Sordes on the teeth, as if mixed with blood (seventeenth day); sordes having the appearance of white mucus (eighteenth day). Grinding of the teeth, with the restless sleep (thirteenth night). Grinding of the teeth whilst asleep; (this symptom occurred very frequently during the whole proving). Shooting pain in the teeth (twenty- sixth day). Dull boring pain in left molar of lower jaw (tenth day). Pain in the exposed nerve of a front tooth for a short time only (third day). Toothache on the left side of the face, before and after breakfast; went off in the forenoon, and returned again after dinner, for an hour or two (second day); toothache, left side, sound and decayed teeth, upper and lower jaw, all the morning (third day); toothache again severely, left side, upper bicuspid and molar teeth, extending to the face; comes on after rising and washing (fourth day); as before, but slight (fifth day); toothache and dull face ache during morning, till after 2 (tenth day). Aching of some decayed teeth in the lower jaw of the left side, after dinner (seventh day). Toothache in the left upper molars at night; fine drawing pain, feeling as if it were going to throb (sixteenth day). Slight toothache on rising, hardly to be noticed, but after going to college, it gradually increased, until noon it was severe; my cheek became considerably swollen; I had constant discharge of saliva from my mouth after 12 M.; this pain was in a decayed tooth; but the teeth on each side were sound, and so elongated that it was with much difficulty and pain that I could eat my dinner; little or no pain in the tooth at night (seventh day); there was slight pain in the tooth, but again toward noon it increased very much, and again with the same flow and drooling of saliva from the mouth; there were some soreness and tenderness of the other teeth on eating (eighth day); not much of the toothache left (ninth day); toothache all gone; but the swelled cheek remained (tenth day); the tooth was the second large molar of the superior maxillary of the left side. Teeth of left side feel elongated and sore; violent pains in upper molars of left side; sound teeth; excessive boring, digging pain, profuse flow of saliva; aggravated by walking in cold air and by contact; also by a high degree of heat; parietal ease obtained only by lying down in a moderately cool room; could not endure the pain; took Mere. with relief (third day). Inclination to toothache in left side of lower jaw in decayed double tooth (fifty-third day). Grumbling in teeth of left side before breakfast; violent pain after eating (fourth day); pain in teeth of left side (fifth day); toothache during the forenoon; intervals of perfect ease, five to ten minutes (sixth day). Soreness of the teeth (fifth day). Soreness of some sound teeth, while eating breakfast (fifteenth day).
