Common symptoms

  I obtained two following facts from Miss V. V. A very small quantity of the inspissated sap (which makes a sugary substance, strongly resembling manna), say from the size of a pea up to a teaspoonful, produces a decided but extremely gentle cathartic action. In the case of women suffering from menstrual suppression, its remedial action is pleasant and painless, restraining the flow, and removing any unpleasant or painful sensation). In larger quantities (but just how large I have failed to learn) the Indian squaw administers it to the pregnant women to procure abortion. A party of several persons gorged themselves with the sugar found on the wounded sides of the trees, and proved by experience that it may be taken in such quantities as to be actively and energetically cathartic.
