Interactions Carbamazepine with Dexamethasone
-
Dangerous interactions
- Carbamazepine is a powerful inducer of the CYP3A4 isoenzyme and other enzyme hepatic systems of the first and second phases of drug metabolism, and when used simultaneously with drugs metabolized by the CYP3A4 isoenzyme, it can cause the induction of metabolism and a decrease in their concentration in blood plasma.
-
Negative interactions
- Reduces the activity of corticosteroids, estrogens and estrogen-containing oral contraceptives, quinidine, cardiac glycosides (induction of metabolism).
- Cytochrome P4503A4 (CYP3A4) is the main isoenzyme providing the formation of carbamazepine-10,11-epoxide (active metabolite).
- Concomitant use with a drug inhibitor of the CYP3A4 isoenzyme may lead to an increase in the concentration of carbamazepine in blood plasma, which, in turn, may cause adverse reactions.
- Simultaneous use of inducers of the CYP3A4 isoenzyme may lead to an acceleration of carbamazepine metabolism and, thus, to a possible decrease in its concentration in blood plasma and, consequently, to a possible decrease in the severity of the therapeutic effect of the drug.
- The cancellation of simultaneously taken inducers of the CYP3A4 isoenzyme can reduce the rate of carbamazepine biotransformation, and, as a result, lead to an increase in the concentration of carbamazepine in blood plasma.
- Inducers of microsomal liver enzymes, including carbamazepine, can enhance the metabolism of dexamethasone.
- When using carbamazepine with dexamethasone, dose adjustment of dexamethasone and more careful monitoring of its clinical and/or side effects may be required.
-
Unclear interactions

Decoding the colors of interactions and contraindications
Dangerous | — | a pronounced negative interaction or contraindication. |
Negative | — | negative interaction or side effect that may reduce effectiveness. |
Positive | — | the interaction can SOMETIMES be used as a positive (often a dose adjustment is needed), or it is an indication of the drug. |
No | — | the drugs do NOT interact, which is separately indicated in the instructions. |
Unclear | — | the system failed to pre-assess the danger. |

Additional information
- Kiberis checks interactions and evaluates drug compatibility for free online right in the instructions thanks to the latest artificial intelligence technologies. The accuracy of finding is more than 95%, the accuracy of the hazard assessment is more than 80%. The online medical service takes into account all the drug groups of the selected drugs and all their components. And since the database contains 25,000 drugs with detailed instructions, not every pharmacologist can compete with our artificial intelligence. List of popular interactions.
